AGES Fellowship in Advanced Gynaecological Endoscopy

Introduction

Simon McDowell is uniquely qualified to attend to his patients' needs. He has a personal approach, and aims to communicate effectively and efficiently, then tailor a treatment plan to his patient's needs.

Training

Simon specialises in the excisional treatment of endometriosis. He works with a team of specialists when endometriosis is severe and affecting other organs like the bowel and bladder. He aims where possible to perform 'one good operation' with thorough and precise removal of affected tissue.

Simon performs laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic treatment of fibroids, hysteroscopic surgery and surgical treatment of ovarian cysts and fallopian tubes. An open procedure is avoided, but is occasionally necessary.

Simon is a subspecialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (CREI), the highest qualification in Australia and New Zealand in this field. He aims to preserve and protect fertility in patients requiring treatment and surgery.

Consultations

Simon sees patients and couples with fertility issues through his practice at Fertility Associates. He sees patients with gynaecological problems at Wakefield Hospital (endometriosis, menstrual disorders, fibroids, ovarian cysts, polyps).

Simon is also a consultant gynaecologist & obstetrician at Wellington Hospital.

Teaching and research

Simon is a senior lecturer at the University of Otago, is involved in research, and has numerous publications. He is committed to teaching and is the lead training supervisor for O&G registrars at Capital and Coast District Health Board.
