Dr Nick Bedford
FRANZCOG, MBChB, DipObst (Distinction)
Nick is a New Zealand trained Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. For his final year of training he worked at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, before completing a 2 year Fellowship in advanced laparoscopy and pelvic floor repair at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide. This gave him focused exposure to a range of different approaches to prolapse repair, including targeted laparoscopic repair where suitable. It also allowed the opportunity to observe Dr Susan Evans, a Gynaecologist and Pain Medicine Specialist who introduced him to pain disorders arising from the pelvic floor.
With this broad experience, Nick seeks to offer comprehensive care for women with pelvic floor disorders, including prolapse, incontinence and pain. He also looks after women with menstrual disorders including adenomyosis, endometriosis and fibroids. Both Simon and Nick specialise in excisional treatments for endometriosis, believing that this allows more comprehensive treatment.
Teaching and research
Nick is the Clinical Lead for Gynaecology at Wellington Hospital, where he also participates in a multidisciplinary pelvic floor clinic, teaches and trains registrars, and is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at Otago Medical School.
Nick believes in education for patients regarding their conditions, including treatments and recovery planning. He promotes multidisciplinary care of complex conditions, with close ties with local Physiotherapists, and excellent collegial relationships with other relevant disciplines such as Urology, Colorectal Surgery and Endocrinology. He regularly gives lectures to GPs and other specialists on a range of gynaecological conditions. He is available to GPs to answer questions and for advice about their patients.
